There is a whole category of electronics destruction that is genuinely not the user's fault. The squirrel that chewed through a coaxial cable and shorted the whole run. The lightning bolt that went through the service entrance and out through the USB ports of a desktop that was turned off. The basement flood that hit the NAS at 3am.
These posts are a reminder to use surge protectors, UPS units, and ideally whole-home surge protection on your electrical panel. They are also a reminder that some things are just beyond our control, and the best you can do is have a backup.
The backup, in most of these cases, was also destroyed. This is a cautionary tale about offsite backups.
