At some point in your homelab journey, you accumulate enough 19" gear — switches, a patch panel, a UPS, a 1U server or two — that it needs to live somewhere permanent. A full 42U rack is overkill for most houses. A 12U open frame is the right size.
StarTech's 12U 4-post open-frame is what I use. 4 posts (not just 2) means it supports heavier gear in the middle. Adjustable depth to fit short-depth switches and longer servers both. Rolls on casters so you can pull it out and work behind it. Comes flat-packed and assembles in 30 minutes with a single Allen key.
Open-frame (no doors) means better cooling and easier cable access. If you need to look 'clean' in a home office, get a short-depth enclosed rack instead. For most of us tucked in a closet or basement, open is the right answer.
